In the summer of 2008, John Burkhart, a student at the Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School, participated in the International Field Program in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As part of his field work, John conducted and implemented a participatory photography workshop – Another Look – for young school children. The participating youth, aged 8-10 years from Escuela No. 5 “Nuestra Senora de Lujan” lived in the Villa Insuperable, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The majority were children of recent Paraguayan immigrants and this was the first opportunity for all of them to take photographs. A short slideshow of images can be downloaded here.
These photographs taken by the children, highlight the crucial role of arts – particularly media such as photography – to empower children and allow them to participate in addressing their own needs, including overcoming issues of child rights and inequity.
