“The Wellbeing and Rights of Children: A Debate on Child Protection”

On Thursday, October 22, 2015, Executive Director Alberto Minujin addressed an audience of 300 in a keynote speech at the I Educo International Congress in Madrid, Spain.  Minujin spoke passionately about the need to look beyond income as a measure of wellbeing for children and described that emphasis as too narrow an approach to grasping and addressing child inequities.  He urged those in attendance and all members of society to consider children as central participants in life — not only as young lives under the care of adult policymakers, parents and teachers.  Based upon Equity for Children’s experiences with civic accountability in Colombia last year, Minujin described an advocacy and action model that emphasizes children’s own voices in the dialogue and the ways in which to achieve that.

Other issues discussed by the participants of the Conference included the relationship between children’s objective and subjective well-being and child poverty and inequality as well as children’s agency, citizenship and rights as they relate to policy.

EDUCO is a non-governmental organization that works globally to foster development cooperation in support of children’s rights and to promote a more just and equitable society.
