Transforming Lives: Equity for Children at the Forefront of Eradicating Poverty

On May 15, 2024, Equity for Children proudly participated in the Virtual Expert Group Meeting on the Implementation of the Third United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (2018-2027). With the objective to provide recommendation to the UN Secretary General, this event, themed “Accelerating Global Actions for a World Without Poverty,” brought together high-level experts from around the globe to discuss innovative policies and measures to combat poverty.

Alberto Minujin Shared Insights on Child Poverty
Our Executive Director, made a compelling presentation titled “Eradicating Poverty, Particularly Among Children and Women: Facing Systemic Challenges in a New Way.” His presentation delved into the systemic challenges faced in eradicating poverty and proposed novel approaches to tackle these issues head-on. Some of his remarks included as policy recommendations are:

  • Enhancing current social programs through top-down and bottom-up collaboration
  • Empowering children and women through voice and participation
  • Creating public space for inclusion and inequality reduction
  • Developing community-based, policy-driven social monitoring programs
  • Fostering knowledge creation and dissemination

Key messages emphasized the multidimensional nature of global poverty, highlighting that half of the 1.1 billion poor in 2023 are children. Significant progress has been made in regions like South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, yet challenges persist, especially for rural dwellers, people with disabilities, and areas with educational deprivation among women.
